Aletschgletscher, Switzerland

September 2nd 2018 – It will be very difficult for future hikes to beat the level of how breathtaking this day was. It was my first time at the Aletsch Glacier, which with the length of 23 kilometers is the longest glacier in Europe. So it was truly an incredible experience to see with my own eyes how big the glacier actually is, because photos don’t do this place justice. After making a quick stop at the Goms suspension bridge in the valley, we took the lift all the way to Eggishorn (2869 meters) from where we had a panoramic view of not just the whole glacier, but also of the various peaks like the Matterhorn off in the distance. Shortly after we arrived, the clouds arrived and covered up all the peaks, however the glacier still remained visible, but now the atmosphere was even more dramatic.
Then we set off on the hike down to get closer to the glacier. Along the way we saw many lots of cool things, like the Fiescher glacier across the valley, various pristine alpine lakes and meadows, numerous sheep right on the hiking trail next to the glacier, and then lots of peaks and ice. The hiking trail goes basically right to the ridge above the glacier, meaning we were so close to the glacier that it felt like we could touch the ice. We were carrying big backpacks since this was just the beginning of a multi-day trip, so it was quite an exhausting hike with all the distance and elevation we covered in one day, but all the effort was absolutely worth it for views like this. Although there wasn’t enough time to make our way to the last viewpoint I had planned, I wasn’t too worried about missing out that day, because I was convinced by that point that I would definitely have to return soon!
